Background Verification: Which Checks Matter for Which Roles
A role-based guide to identity, education, employment, address, criminal and reference checks.

Verification is risk management, not paperwork. The goal is to match the depth of checks to the risk of the role, so you protect the business without slowing hiring.
The core checks
- Identity: confirms the person is who they claim to be using government IDs.
- Address: confirms residence, digitally or physically.
- Education: confirms degrees and certificates directly with institutions.
- Employment: confirms designation, tenure and exit status with previous employers.
- Criminal record: checks court and police records within the legal framework.
- Reference: gives context from managers or colleagues.
Matching checks to roles
Entry-level and operational roles
Identity and address are the baseline. For roles with cash handling or customer access, add criminal checks.
Security, housekeeping and facility staff
Identity, address, criminal and reference checks are strongly recommended because these staff have access to premises.
Finance, BFSI and procurement
Identity, education, employment, criminal and credit checks (with consent) help prevent fraud and meet regulatory expectations.
Healthcare
Licence and registration verification — nursing council, medical council or equivalent — is essential alongside identity and employment.
Technology and leadership
Education, employment, reference and, for leadership, a deeper integrity review.
Do it right: consent and privacy
Collect written or digital consent from each candidate, explain what will be checked, and store results securely with restricted access.
