Karnataka Professional Tax: A Practical Guide for Employers
How professional tax works in Karnataka — registration, deduction, payment cycle and common errors.

Professional tax (PT) is a state-level levy on salaried employees, collected by employers and deposited with the state. In Karnataka it is governed by the Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act.
Slabs and thresholds are revised periodically. Always confirm the latest notified slabs on the Commercial Taxes Department website before configuring payroll.
Who must register
Every employer who pays salary or wages above the exemption threshold needs to obtain a PT enrolment (to deduct and remit) and, in many cases, a registration for the entity itself. Employers with branches should confirm the registration structure with their consultant.
How deduction works
- PT is deducted monthly from employee salary based on gross monthly pay slabs.
- Employees below the exemption threshold pay nothing.
- Historically the maximum monthly deduction has been a flat amount, with a slightly higher amount in February to meet the annual cap.
Payment and returns
- Deposit deducted PT within the due date prescribed for your category of employer.
- File periodic returns as required — monthly, or annual for smaller employers.
- Keep challans reconciled with payroll registers.
Common errors
- Applying another state's slab to Bangalore employees.
- Missing PT on employees whose gross crosses the threshold mid-year.
- Forgetting to update slabs after a government notification.
- Not enrolling new employees who join across month boundaries.
Make it automatic
Modern payroll systems calculate PT automatically, but they still need the correct slab configuration and a person responsible for due dates. If you want to remove this admin entirely, our payroll and compliance teams handle PT along with PF, ESI and TDS.
